Mastercard is seeking to gain a foothold in Vietnam for open-loop fare payments, helping to fund a launch this summer on 200 public buses in Ho Chi Minh City. Among other things, the payments scheme will enable an NFC virtual Mastercard-branded card.
In February, Visa renewed its MOU with the Ho Chi Minh City Dept. of Transport to develop open-loop technology. An earlier MOU yielded open-loop payments on only 50 buses in the city. According to an announcement of the renewal, the department said it is “aiming for a 20-fold increase, to 1,000 buses.”
