Southern California commuter rail operator Metrolink plans to launch a pilot of open-loop payments in advance of World Cup matches to be hosted by Los Angeles and could roll out the service across its seven lines in time for the Summer Olympics in 2028.
Metrolink, administered by the Southern California Regional Rail Authority, originally planned to launch the pilot in 2025. It now says it will be ready by June, when the first World Cup matches begin at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, a suburb of Los Angeles, a Metrolink spokeswoman told Mobility Payments.
