After more than five years of fare-free buses, the Kansas City Area Transit Authority, or KCATA, plans to resume charging fares starting June 1. Hitting that deadline, even with the agency’s phased approach, will be difficult.
The challenges do not stop there. KCATA decided that the date when it starts collecting fares again would be the best time to go cashless on board its buses. It would make KCATA one of the few transit agencies in the U.S. to eliminate cash acceptance on its vehicles.
