The operator of the large Hong Kong metro system, MTR, announced it will launch open-loop payments Dec. 23, initially restricting card and mobile wallet acceptance to Visa-branded cards under an apparent exclusivity and marketing deal with the payments scheme.
MTR delivered 1.3 billion trips in 2022, said it was enabling two gates per station for riders to tap their credit and debit cards and open-loop credentials in NFC wallets for entry and exit. It will gradually increase open loop to all of its 2,400 gates by 2028.
