The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority launched open-loop payments yesterday, in time–just barely–for the city to co-host the first of its FIFA World Cup matches in two weeks.

With the launch, LA Metro becomes the last of the top 10 U.S. transit agencies to introduce open loop. Longtime vendor Cubic Transportation Systems implemented the technology as part of a $66.4 million sole-source contract. (See below.) Delivery–on a tight deadline–was believed to have been late.
